Every healthy organization has a vision to guide it. Just as your own eyes need a regular checkup, your organization’s vision may need some adjustment from time to time. Stay on the right track with these questions:
- Is your vision about what you “should” do? A compelling vision is based on what you want to achieve, not what you (or others) think you “should” be doing. Focus your vision on dreams and desires, not on day-to-day details.
- Is your vision distinct from your business goals? A business goal isn’t the same as an organization’s vision. A vision is a big picture; business goals support it. For example, if your vision is to run the best restaurant in the city, hiring a top chef is a valid goal. Just don’t become so focused on your goal that it replaces your vision. (Landing a top chef is great, but customer service is also vital.)
- Does your vision still excite you? Sometimes leaders achieve their vision and stop there. In time, following their vision becomes just a job. If you’re feeling bored, look for ways to expand your vision. If necessary, adopt a new one that gets you and your employees enthusiastic about coming to work.
