Get Out of Your Career Rut

Worried that your career is stuck in neutral and that you are currently in a career rut? Try these strategies to get back up to speed:

  • Look into the future. Think about where you want to be 10 years from now. Now work backward. In order to be in the desired spot 10 years from now, where will you need to be in eight years? And to get there, where will you need to be in six years? Use this process to set incremental goals that will help you get out of that career rut.
  • Hire a coach. If you have trouble figuring out how to get from where you are to where you want to be, maybe you should seek professional help in the form of a career coach. A coach can provide an objective assessment of your strengths and weaknesses and can help you map out a strategy for achieving your goals.
  • Develop new interests. Even if you’re not ready—or in a position—to make a major career change, you don’t have to keep spinning your wheels. Try expanding your interests. Get involved in volunteer work, join a club, take up a sport, or enroll in a class. Becoming a more rounded person can help resolve your frustration and add to your skill set.
